What are praseodymium-based cathode powders and how are they used?
Praseodymium-based cathode powders are a type of material that can be used for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and oxygen storage, which are devices that convert chemical energy into electrical energy. Praseodymium-based cathode powders have some advantages over other cathode materials, such as high oxygen storage capacity, mixed ionic electronic conductivity, and compatibility with different electrolytes.
What are the types of Praseodymium-based cathode powders?
One type of Praseodymium based cathode powder is Praseodymium-Cerium Oxide (PCO), which is a solid solution of praseodymium and cerium oxides. PCO exhibits surprisingly high levels of oxygen nonstoichiometry, even under oxidizing conditions, resulting in mixed ionic electronic conductivity. PCO also shows rapid oxygen exchange kinetics, comparable to other high performance SOFC cathode materials. PCO can be used as a model MIEC cathode material compatible with both zirconia and ceria-based solid oxide electrolytes.
Praseodymium Strontium Manganite (PSM) based cathode powders are a type of perovskite manganite materials that can be used as alternative cathodes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (ITSOFC). They can be synthesized by a solution-combustion method using metal nitrates and urea as fuel, resulting in fine and homogeneous powders. PSM cathodes have high oxygen nonstoichiometry and mixed ionic electronic conductivity, which can enhance the electrochemical performance of ITSOFC.
Our Approach to Fabricating Praseodymium-Based Cathode Powders
Praseodymium-based cathode powders are prepared by solid-state reaction or co-precipitation methods, followed by calcination and milling to obtain fine particles with a desired size distribution and surface area. Praseodymium-based cathode materials can then be made into inks and suspensions for multilayer electrode applications onto substrates. Performance can be adjusted based on tailoring of the cathode layer particle size, surface area, porosity, and thickness.
